THE BONE WARS

This small publication tells the story of The Bone Wars, a period of competitive discovery in the field of paleontology, highlighted by the feud between paleontologists Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.
I utilized imagery from Cope’s and Marsh’s past scientific journals and writings to create illustrations that convey their quarrels visually. These elements rise, peak, and fall indramatics as the reader moves from page to page. I also took inspiration from the journals’ page borders, diagraming lines, and footnotes and reimaged them as elements for captions and folios.
